News round-up & update on events inside Iran, April 5th & 6th

* * Another Iranian nuclear scientist has defected and is seeking asylum in France. The man who was only identified as Mohammad is said to be 34 years old and formerly a resident of Tehran, specializing in the design and construction of nuclear reactors. Mohammad told Italian Emmegi Press Agency: “Due to the Iranian regime’s nuclear program, the Iranian people have been forced into a economic destitution; therefore I will no longer cooperate with the Islamic Republic.”

This news comes just as international press reported last week of Shahram Amiri’s defection to the U.S.

* * The Iranian embassy in Canberra, Australia has been accused of spying on the student activist group residing in Australia who oppose the regime in Tehran. It is said that all the information gleaned by the embassy staff is sent back to the Ministry of Intelligence and Information in Tehran in order to pursue punitive action against these students and pro-democracy activists. The Iranian embassy in Canberra has filmed all demonstrations and gatherings of Iranians throughout Australia and has systematically identified the various people who have participated in peaceful protests against the Iranian regime. Reportedly many of these protesters have also come under harassment and have received death threats by the embassy staff and recruited individuals  who work for them.

* * Hamid Massouminejad, Iranian correspondent for the regime-run media outlet, Mehr New Agency who was arrested in Rome and charged with weapons smuggling has been found guilty of spying. Massouminejad was among those arrested on March 3rd, when the Italian police conducted a raid on the suspected members of the Iranian secret service. Massouminejad and another man were among the seven charged in Milan of buying and selling weapons to Iran via European middlemen. During the recent weeks, it was revealed that other that as one of the high ranking members of the Ministry of Intelligence and Information, based in Rome, Massouminejad would pass himself off as both journalist and an employee of Iran Air.
