With her two friends still detained in Iran’s Evin Prison, Sarah Shourd insists her first days on American soil in 14 months have been bittersweet.
At a New York press conference Sunday, the 32-year-old Shourd formally with Iran to release her fiance Shane Bauer and friend Joshua Fattal, both 28, with whom she was arrested in 2009 having allegedly hiked over the Iranian border and into Iraq.
“This is not a time to celebrate,” Shourd told reporters, while expressing deep regard for Iran’s decision to release her. “My disappointment in not sharing this with Shane and Josh was crushing, and I stand before you today only one-third free.”
Shourd appeared alongside Bauer’s mother Cindy Hickey and Laura Fattal, mother of Joshua. “I was very happy for Sarah and her mom,” Hickey ABC News. “But very sad that Shane wouldn’t be coming with her. … How hard it must have been for them to separate.”
