The day after the Nuclear Security Summit convened, the U.S. Department of Defense addressed the approach on Iran and their measures for upholding national security.

Michele Flournoy, undersecretary of defense for policy, said that the Administration has declared Iran’s threat to the U.S. national safety a top priority. Flournoy outlined the strategic plan to weaken Iran’s military efforts. By preventing Iran to obtain nuclear weapons and destabilizing their efforts to form extremist groups in the Middle East, the U.S. military hopes to halt their military movement.

In regards on how the U.S. Department of Defense plans to undertake these measures, Flournoy said “we continue our effort to ensure Israel’s qualitative military edge, and we are working closely with the Israelis to develop multi-layered ballistic missile defenses.” It is through these initiatives that officials hope to destabilize Iran’s activities.

Flournoy also addressed their tactics in the region. Through security cooperation efforts with Iran’s neighbors, the U.S. military hopes to “send a clear signal to Iran that its pursuit of nuclear weapons will lead to its own isolation and will ultimately make it less — not more — secure.”

It is the Department’s goal that these measures will shut down Iran’s military movement. According to Flournoy, these tactics have already resulted in positive results and they are confident that these policies will result in their destabilization.
