Up to 10 Iranian workers have reportedly died in hospital after being badly burned in an explosion in a gas pipeline.

State media said the pipeline exploded in Iran’s northeastern province of Khorasan-e Razavi on September 10 when it was accidentally struck by an excavating machine.

The semiofficial Fars news agency quoted Alireza Gharibi, director of Iran Gas Engineering and Development Company, as saying one day after the explosion that “about nine to 10 people were killed in the Sarakhs pipeline blast.”

Initial reports suggested no more than two people had been killed in the incident but that at least 16 people were injured.
