In the past week, four people were executed in Iran for the charges of “sexual assault” and “drug possession.”

Yousef Khamseh was hanged yesterday in the city of Qazvin charged with sexual assault. Khamseh, who was also charged with “attempted murder and robbery”, was arrested last November.

Last Saturday three men accused of “possessing drugs” were executed in Ahwaz. The prisoners were charged with possession of 80 grams of crack, 335 grams and 43 grams of heroin each.

Iran has the highest rate of execution in the world after China. According to Amnesty International 400 people were executed in Iran in 2009.

The Amnesty International report goes on the reveal that the rate of executions has repeatedly increased in Iran every year.

Murder, drug possession, rape and moharebeh (enmity against God) are amongst the offenses that receive the death penalty in Iran.

In the past year, close to ten political dissidents were executed charged with “Moharebeh.”
