BEIJING — China would maintain high-level exchanges with Iran, said Premier Wen Jiabao Thursday in a meeting with visiting Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi in Beijing after the eighth prime ministers’ meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

“The Sino-Iran relationship has witnessed rapid development, as the two countries’ leaders have had frequent exchanges, and cooperation in trade and energy has widened and deepened,” China’s Xinhua news agency quoted Wen as saying at the Great Hall of the People.

Wen said China would maintain high-level exchanges with Iran, enhance mutual understanding and trust, promote bilateral pragmatic cooperation and coordinate closely in international affairs.

China would continue playing a constructive role in seeking a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, Wen said.

Rahimi said developing the bilateral relationship was the will of both the Iran leadership and people.

Iran hoped to further deepen the cooperation in trade and energy, strengthen coordination with China in international affairs and promote healthy and steady bilateral relations, he said.
