Arresting and pressuring student activists is never ending. While new reports emerge every day of the disturbing conditions of detained students, we are witnessing a new wave of arrests; a new wave that has led to the arrest of more than 15 students.
Since Monday 12 Bahman, 12 student activists have been arrested by security forces. The majority of the detainees are former student activists, and a small number are current student activists from Tehran University.
On Monday, Reza Zeinali, former political director of the Tehran University Management Department’s Islamic Student Association was arrested at his house by scores of security forces.
That same night, Mohammad Ali Rafei, political director of the Tehran University’s Law Department’s Islamic Student Association was arrested by security forces while exiting the university.
Hours later, past midnight on Monday, security forces raided the houses of former student activists Vahid Abedini, Navid Abedini and Esmaeil Izadi, arresting them and confiscating some of their personal belongings. Vahid Abedini was a former member of the Tehran University’s Democracy-Seeking Association and Navid Abdedini was the former secretary of the Tehran University Literature Department’s Islamic Student Association.
According to reports, Hamid Yahyavi, a political science PhD student from Tehran University went missing that same night while walking from the university campus to the dormitories. According to Yahyavi’s friends, he had been threatened by Student Basij members several times throughout the week, and he has most likely been arrested by security forces. Yahyavi, an honors student, is not a member of any student organization.
One day later, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, two other Tehran University students named Nazanin Hasannia and Sahar Ghaseminejad were arrested after security forces attacked their homes. After searching their homes, security forces also confiscated some of their personal belongings.
That same day Nazanin Farzanju, a French language translator and student and human rights activist was arrested at her home in Mehrshahr, Karaj, and transferred to an unknown location by security forces. No information is available about the reason for her arrest or her whereabouts.
Kashan University was also the scene of arrests of student activists. On Monday, Mohammad Mokhtari, the former secretary of the Kashan University Islamic Student Association was arrested while leaving his house with two of his colleagues. His two colleagues were arrested hours later but Mohammad Mokhtari continues to remain behind bars. Security forces then attacked his father’s house and confiscated his books and computer case. Mohammad Mokhtari has been charged with distributing propaganda against the regime.
