While Mojtaba Zolqadr, the representative of Iran’s supreme leader in the Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) believes that not confronting the leaders of the country’s Green Movement is not a sign of the regime’s determination, he spoke of confronting the reformist candidates at a “suitable moment.”
Speaking for a group of Basiji personnel in the southern province of Bushehr (where Iran’s nuclear power generating plant is located), the leader’s representative asserted that they “had taught a lesson to bigger fish”, a reference to the leaders of the reformist movement.
Zolqadr is a student of infamous fundamentalist cleric Mesbah Yazdi who was appointed to this position last summer. He once again claimed that absolutely nothing would happen if the three reformist leaders (i.e. Khatami, Mousavi and Karoubi) were imprisoned. “Of course there is a difference in how different individuals are treated and sometimes it is necessary not to physically confront someone,” Zolqadr said indicating the current prevailing thought among the leadership of the regime.
It should be noted that Zolqadr has opposed arresting the reformist leaders last summer arguing that they would be turned into “heroes.” “If the regime decides to prosecute them, they would turn into heroes,” he had said.
Zolqadr’s vocal views against reformists also reached out to ayatollah Montazeri who passed away last week. He had said that Montazeri had bloodied ayatollah Khomeini’s heart (i.e. hurt him tremendously). He also claimed that Montazeri did whatever he wished against the Islamic regime.
One recalls that Montazeri had publicly said that the June 2009 presidential elections had been fraudulent, and he had protested against the killings of the innocent protestors and called the Islamic republic to be illegitimate. “For people to stay in power through force, fraud and deception brings no legitimacy,” ayatollah Montazeri had said.Leader’s Rep Attacks Pro-Reform Candidates
