A political prisoner has died suspiciously this morning in ward 240 of Evin Prison.

The Prisoners’ Rights unit of HRA reports that a political has died suspiciously this morning, in ward 240 of Evin Prison. The body was taken to the ward 7 clinic and Evin doctors have announced a severed spinal cord as the cause of death.

The HRA has not yet been able to find out the identity of the deceased prisoner and will announce the details as more information comes in.

In the past, ward 240 of Evin Prison was under the management of the Judiciary and the IRI Prison Authority and its solitary cells were used to punish the detainees. Since last year and particularly after the post election events, the Intelligence Ministry has taken complete control of the ward. Many post election detainees are being held in the ward 240 which is being used for the same purposes as the ward 209.

The majority of the detainees of the November 4th and December 7th protests are being held in solitary cells of the ward 240.
