AFP reports that the president may also tour southern Lebanon; trip will be first of its kind since he took office in 2005; will meet with various gov’t and Hizbullah officials.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is expected to visit Lebanon in October, according to a report by AFP on Thursday.

“Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be visiting Lebanon from October 13 to October 14 and is expected to meet President Michel Sleiman, Prime Minister Saad Hariri, parliament speaker Nabih Berri and Hizbullah officials,” an Iranian government source told AFP.

The president may also tour southern Lebanon, said the unidentified source.

This trip will be the first of its kind since Ahmadinejad took office in 2005.

Reformist Mohammed Khatami was the last Iranian president to visit Lebanon in May 2003. Lebanese President Michel Sleiman visited Teheran in November 2008.

In February, Ahmadinejad met with Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah in Damascus, Syria.

Iran has said it is ready to supply Lebanon with weapons and military aid after a request by the Hizbullah chief. The request came after the US imposed a halt to aid supplies to Beirut following August’s border clash between the IDF and Lebanese Armed Forces which left an Israeli soldier and four Lebanese dead.

Teheran has also threatened play an active role if Israel attacks Lebanon.
