Enghelab’eh Eslami website among others, reports that octogenarian ultra hardline Mullah Ahmad Jannati, who is also the head of the Guardian Council  is rumored to have suffered a brain aneurysm and has gone into a coma. The various reports claim that Jannati is in the intensive care unit of Tehran’s Baghiatollah hospital and is under tight security.

Jannati has been one of the staunchest supporters of the Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Khamenei and is known for his continued attacks and accusations against  Iranian opposition leaders and the Green movement.

On Monday morning, Tehran time Abbas-Ali Kadkhodaei, the spokesman for the Guardian Council denied this rumor, however sources, including a number of upper level hospital staff who wish to remain anonymous, have confirmed Jannati’s status. Kadkhodaei told Mehr News, the media arm of the Revolutionary Guards: “This is an attempt by the various opposition forces and enemies of the Iranian leadership to confuse public opinion.”

The 84-year-old Jannati recently provoked a controversy after accusing the reformist opposition leaders of receiving one billion dollars from the US to push forward the plan of toppling the Iranian regime.
