A language professor at the Islamic Azad University of Bojnourd has been sentenced to three years in prison.
According to the Kaleme website, the three-year prison sentence for Hadi Hakim Shafaei was handed down by the second branch of the revolutionary court of the city of Bojnourd. Shafaei was found guilty of “acting against national security” (two years), “propagating against the establishment” (six months), and “insulting the leader” (six months).
Shafaei was arrested by agents from the Intelligence Office of Bojnourd on the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution on 11 February 2010. The professor subsequently spent fifteen days in solitary confinement and fifteen days in the public ward of a Bojnourd prison and was temporarily released on a bail of more than $50,000.
Shafaei had been protesting the results of the rigged presidential elections in June 2009. At the behest of the intelligence bodies, he has already been barred from teaching at his university.
