The reports:

In a secret report to the Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Sadegh Larijani, Head of the Iranian Judiciary has asked permission to execute 1120 prisoners. Based on Larijani’s report to Khamenei, 1120 individuals have been sentenced to execution, all of whose sentences have been confirmed by the Iranian High Tribunal, and all that remains for the sentences to be carried out is the Supreme Leader’s to sign off on them.

Normally, an execution sentence is carried out when the Iranian High Tribunal confirms the sentence, however due to the pressure from international public opinion against Iranian authorities, Larijani felt that he should seek out Khamenei’s permission.

The Iranian judiciary claims that the prisoners who have been sentenced to execution are mostly charged with drug smuggling however, the horrifying statistics of executions in Iran that have had serious the international and political repercussions, have delayed the executions. Larijani’s report also touches on the uncertain situation in which the prisoners and the judiciary find themselves.

At the same time, another report from the head of the Iranian Bureau of Prisons was sent to Larijani that states that currently there are six times more prisoners than what the prison system can handle and that prisons have exceeded their space limits.

Based on various reports, since 2005 till now, contrary to the claims made by the Iranian authorities, the number of executions in Iran has increased. Up until now the officials argument has been that the more criminals are imprisoned, the more crime will decrease. However the results have proven to be quite the opposite and crime rate has in face risen.

Along side extensive executions of criminals, the Iranian regime officials also continue to execute minors under 18 years of age, political opponents and more. And often many of the political opponents are charged for Moharebeh (Combating God), a charge punishable by death.

At the moment however, reports have begun to surface of yet another 50 executions during the last three months at the Vakil-Abad prison in Mash’had.  According to Ahmad Qabel, one of the people close to Ayatollah Montazeri, who has spent recent months in that prison, in one day alone, 31 people were executed though the prosecutor’s office of the province of Khorassan only reported that the five who were executed were international drug smugglers.
