During his closed-door trial, on Saturday, July 18th,  Isa Saharkhiz, political prisoner and former head of Iran’s Press Supervisory Board called for the prosecution of Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Iranian Supreme Leader. On the same day cleric Mohsen Kadivar (in Persian) to the head of the (Hashemi-Rafsanjani) calling for Khamenei’s impeachment.

On Tuesday, July 20th however, Khamenei issued a statement via an interview published in the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) entitled “A Pledge to Velayat’eh Faqih“, a blue print for new methods of tyranny and the further spread of the supreme leadership and the hardliners’ power grab.  The unidentified interviewer maintains that the Supreme Leader is the actual representation of the 12th Imam and that Khamenei, who refers to himself as “the fully-qualified religious jurisprudent” considers his leadership to be merited and that his ranking is equal to that of the Shiite imams and the Prophet Mohammad which means that his commands and absolute rule signifies the necessity for “the pledge” to his title of Supreme Leader.

The interviewer asks Khamenei: “In the case of the pledge to the Velayat’eh Faqih, could you please expound on the nature of one’s duties and actions that would attest to our pledge?” Khamenei replies: “Velayat’eh Faqih means the absolute rule of the fully qualified religious jurisprudent who during the absence (of the ) is in command and is a branch of the authority of the Prophet, calling on all to obey his dictum. This is a sign of the pledge. Therefore the Supreme Leadership has absolute prominence and to whom one must totally submit. Anyone who refuses to believe or has doubts is doomed to hell. All beings are instructed by the Supreme Leader.”

Interestingly Khamenei’s own site deleted the rather long question and answer formatted statement. Received reports also indicate that a number of the prominent Shiite clerics in Qom have expressed their astonishment and apprehension at such a statement.

Now the issue of Khamenei’s roundabout claim over all Muslims has raised eyebrows and angered many throughout the Islamic enclaves, especially those within the Arab world, given that Khamenei is a Shia and Shi’ite Muslims make up 10% of the world’s Muslims, with the other 90% being Sunni.
