Finally after follow-up attempts by the family and lawyer of activist Mahboubeh Karami, she was summoned by the medical forensic office to be examined. According to we-change portal, the letter of forensic office addressed to Evin clinic indicated the she suffers from depression. Mahboubeh has told Evin clinic physicians that she screams while asleep, which prevents her cellmates from being able to sleep at nights. However, the clinic physician had diagnosed her with septum deviation and suggested she should undergo a septoplasty.

However, rules observed by Evin prison enforce that her temporary detention warrant cannot be changed into a release-on-bail verdict even for undergoing a surgery and treatment of depression, and she should be treated under prison’s supervision.

In a recent conversation with her lawyer and family, Mahboubeh Karami has said she preferred to stay in prison as conflicts inside Evin are not suitable for such a surgery and treatment. Therefore, after returning from Taleghani Hospital she canceled the septoplasty surgery.

Mahboubeh Karami’s brother has also stated that keeping Mahboubeh detained in prison is not appropriate and that better conditons need to be provided for her as soon as possible so that she could be treated.

Mahboubeh Karami, a women’s rights activist and member of the One Million Signatures Campaign, was arrested by security agents on 2 March 2010 at her father’s house. Her court hearing was supposed to be held at branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court on 28 June 2010, but the session was postponed to 9 July 2010 as the head of the branch was not present at the court on the due date.
