Film director, Jafar Panahi was arrested along with his wife, their daughter and a number of their guests.

Panahi who among others directed internationally acclaimed films such as  The White Balloon (1995), The Circle (2000), Crimson Gold (2003) and Offside (2006) was arrested along with his wife Tahereh Saeedi, their daughter Solmaz and around 15 guests when the couple’s house was raided in the early hours of Tuesday March 2. There is still no information on their whereabouts. According to a RAHANA reporter, the agents also searched the house and seized a number of items.

In September 2009 Panahi was a member of the jury for the Montreal Film Festival and he took the stage wearing a green scarf. He had also brought along scarves for other members of the Jury to wear in solidarity with protesters in Iran who disputed Ahmadinejad’s fraudulent June election.

Then in February, Panahi who was the honorary guest of this year’s Berlin Film Festival was prohibited from leaving Iran to travel to Germany.In 2006 Panahi won the Berlinale’s Silver Bear award for his achievement in film.

He was briefly detained in the summer of 2009 after he was arrested with his wife Tahereh Saeedi, women’s rights activist Mahnaz Mohammadi and Rokhsareh Ghaem-Maghami in Tehran’s Behesht’eh Zahra cemetery where they had gone to lay flower on the graves of the protesters killed in the aftermath of the June presidential election.
