Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehe’i, Iran’s Attorney General, told reporters in Isfahan that people who have been arrested in the wake of the June election will be pardoned or will receive a sentence reduction, if they repent and compensate for the damages they have caused.

Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) - During the conference on medicine and the judiciary in Isfahan, Ejehe’i was asked by a journalist about the possibility of assistance for arrested journalists.  He responded, “In general, Islamic Republic officials, regardless of the posts they are holding, do not want anybody to be in prison unless the person has acted detrimentally to national interests or the freedom of the people. Obviously when such a person is out of prison, he becomes a source of corruption [in society].”

According to ISNA (Iran Student News Agency), Ejehe’i added:

The people who are not in this circle [of threat to national interest] and pose no risk, can take advantage of either a sentence reduction, conditional release, or a temporary leave. The Islamic Republic has granted so many pardons that it now faces the objection of the people. If an offender repents and expresses remorse, and there is no plaintiff [personal complaitant], (s)he will certainly be pardoned or receive a sentence reduction. The same applies for recent events. If those who have been arrested in recent riots truly repent and compensate for the damages they have caused and correct their past conduct, they will be helped in the Appeals Court.

Iran’s Attorney General pointed out that “one of the demands of the judiciary and other responsible offices is that if individuals continue with their delinquent and law-breaking conduct, the system will certainly act.”

In response to the question whether certain activities will still continue, Ejehe’i stated, “After ultimatums, any act in any ambience will be dealt with more harshly. For example, there are rumours that nearing the end of the year (mid March 2010), some activities [protests] will take place. Rest assured that once the ultimatums run out, they [Iranian citizens] will face severe [consequences].”

Ejehe’i also stated, “The wrong-doers will certainly be arrested, and it is possible [as a consequence] that [the wrong-doers] will deprive their families from the joy of the New Year [Norooz] holiday.”
