Omid Montazeri has been sentenced to 6 years in prison after a grossly unfair trial.
RAHANA – On February 27, judge Salavati handed a 6-year prison sentence to Omid Montazeri one of the defendants in the trial of the Ashura detainees. His lawyer was denied access to Montazeri and his file all through the investigation and court process, all of which defined as the rights of a defendant under the Constitution.
According to CHRR, Montazeri was arrested on December 28, 2009 after going to the investigations office of the Intelligence Ministry to seek information about his mother who had been arrested along with a number of her guests the night before. Omid has been detained for over two months but his mother, Mahin Fahimi, a member of the Mothers for Peace was released on recognizance on February 9.
Since his arrest, hundreds of activists across the world have asked for Montazeri’s release. He is a blogger, journalist and a final year law student at Allameh University. Montazri’s articles on cultural issues have been published by many official newspapers including Farhang Ashti and Khabar. His father was executed in 1988 during the mass elimination of political prisoners.
